Human Metapneumovirus antibodies
Initially discovered in 2001, human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a member of the Paramyxoviridae family, which is responsible for a significant number of respiratory infections. Viral exposure occurs throughout the world, with approximately 100% of individuals seropositive by the age of 5. The virus exists in two major genotypes, and presents clinically with symptoms most similar to respiratory syncytial virus (hRSV).
The virus causes upper respiratory infections with mild effects and more severe lower respiratory infections which lead to pneumonia, bronchiolitis, and wheezing. It also exacerbates coexisting respiratory conditions such as asthma. Infections are generally more severe in the young, the elderly, and the immunocompromised.
hMPV infections have been well-documented in studies of hospitalized children, with an infectivity rate of 5-8%. While the virus has been present in the population for over 50 years, it is considered to be an emerging infectious disease because its significant role in respiratory infection has only recently been identified.
There are four viral subtypes, A1, A2, B1, and B2, which circulate throughout the population and often coinfect along with other respiratory viruses such as hRSV. hMPV can be detected through RT PCR and immunofluorescence assays with approximately equal sensitivity. Greater consistency and more rapid results can be achieved with the immunofluorescence assay.
